According to a Washington Post report, the UMD Athletic Department, in defense of the move, claims it is going to lose approximately $4.7 million dollars across 10 sports. It's hard to believe that such a large school - with high profile basketball & football programs generating millions of dollars for the athletic department each year - could find themselves in such dire financial straits. Unfortunately, this is becoming all to commonplace in collegiate sports: high revenue generating, non-Olympic sports are allowed to operate on a budget larger than some small countries, while non-revenue generating Olympic sports (swimming & diving, gymnastics and track & field, etc...) wind up as casualties littering the college athletic landscape, simply because they can't cover their comparatively low operating expenses. Conventional wisdom says those operating expenses are simply a cost of doing business as an NCAA-sanctioned institution of higher education. It's too bad that the profits generated by those basketball & football programs can't cover the costs of the non-revenue generating programs.
Ironically, year after year the graduation rate for swimming & diving programs throughout the NCAA far exceeds that of popular "revenue generating" sports such as football & basketball. This seems to go against the grain of the very mission of the NCAA.
In the event some process is put in place to help save the UMD men's & women's swimming & diving programs, whether it be a fund to contribute to or a petition to sign, that information will be posted here. SMAC encourages all of its families and student-athletes to stay on top of this story as it unfolds. Email me if you have any questions.

A REVISED meet schedule is posted on the bulletin board at the pool, reflecting the following changes:
We will be attending the following meets-
November 18-20 @ GBSA in Catonsville;
December 9-11 @ Arundel Swim Center in Annapolis.
We will NOT be attending the December 16-18 meet in Westminster.
Also, the qualifying times for the Retriever ("RAC") meet in January (13-16) are posted; hopefully we will have additional SMAC swimmers qualify for this meet at either the November or December meets. The RAC meet is prelims/finals, and I'd like to make that meet format a priority for SMAC, and get as many people as possible qualified for that RAC meet in Janaury.
If you have any questions about any of this, email me at erikcollins19@gmail.com

I've received the sweats & other apparel, just in time for the meet! I'll hand them out at afternoon workout today- be sure to ask for them if I forget.
Busy week this week, as I'll have updated warmup times for the meet this weekend, I'll post the meet announcement for the GBSA meet in Catonsville, and hand out the October calendars.
PLEASE NOTE: there will be NO WORKOUT for the Platinum, Gold & Silver groups next Monday, October 24 (the day after the CBAC meet)- not in the morning, not in the afternoon. The only SMAC group to have workout that day will be the Bronze Group (5:30-6:30 p.m. with Michael Gray)- everybody else has the day off to rest up after the meet, get caught up on homework & have dinner with your families.
Lastly, I'll be getting in touch with any family who has a swimmer who qualified for the RAC meet in January. This is a prelims/finals meet and an excellent opportunity to get some higher-level racing under our belt. Hopefully we can make this meet a priority (meaning, NO BREAK from training over the holidays so I can rest everybody) and tear it up at that meet.
Thanks for being a part of SMAC- check back here later in the week for more information/updates on the above listed items.

After workout on Friday Night, September 16th, the seniors will be going to THREE BROTHERS for dinner before going across the street to Playpark for putt-putt. This is a chance from our original dinner destination which I made, based on Three Brothers being better suited to handle our group on a Friday Night.
I'm still looking for parents who can accompany the group from the pool to Three Brothers, as I have the Silver workout from 6-7 p.m. on Friday Night. I will meet everybody at Three Brothers, and from there go over to play putt-putt.
Any questions, email me at erikcollins19@gmail.com

After workout on Friday Night, September 16th, the Platinum & Gold groups will be going to dinner and then putt. Dinner will be either IHOP or Momma Lucia's (it's up to the group to decide which), then we'll go to the putt-putt course right across from the Spring Hill Suites hotel, right off of Route 4.
If any parents are willing to accompany the group to dinner right after workout, that would be much appreciated. I'll meet everybody at dinner after I finish the Silver workout at 7 p.m., then we can go to putt-putt right after everybody is done eating.
$25 should be enough to cover everybody's meal and mini-golf. Email me if you have any questions, I'm looking forward to a fun time!

Thank you to all the SMAC parents who came to the meeting yesterday afternoon. A reminder about our attendance requirement for meets this year:
Silver- must be at 3 workouts per week (out of 5 workouts) for the previous four weeks at the time the official meet entry is submitted;
Gold- must be at 5 workouts per week (out of 8 workouts) for the previous four weeks at the time the official meet entry is submitted.
This policy is new this year in an attempt to ensure that all SMAC student-athletes who swim in meets are ready to race. We feel these requirements are fair and are not a minimum number in order to be part of each group, simply the minimum number of workouts needed each week in order to be ready to race at meets. If a student-athlete has not met the required number of workouts for one meet, there is always another meet the following month!
Thanks for your attention to this, if you have any questions email me at erikcollins19@gmail.com
I'm looking forward to a great year!

MEET SCHEDULE UPDATE:
We will NOT be going to the "Freestyle Send Off" meet hosted by ASC (Sept 30-Oct 1). However, be sure to add the CBAC meet (Oct 21-23) to your meet schedule. We'll be sure to go some time trials early in October.
We'll still be going to the RAC meet, October 8-9. This meet is only for 9-13 year olds, but there aren't any time standards, so everybody in that age range will be able to race.

On Saturday, June 18, everybody in the Platinum & Gold groups are invited up to Old Town (VA) for a hearty burger dinner and a "Ghost Tour" through historic Old Town, Alexandria.
Plan on meeting at my house at 5:00 p.m., and we'll walk over to "The Burger Joint" on Washington Street for dinner. "BGR," as it's known, has a wide array of burgers to choose from, and the sweet potato fries are a nice alternative to traditional fries. After dinner, we'll walk down King Street towards City Hall, where we'll have a private Ghost Tour through Old Town. The tour starts at 7:30 p.m., and will last about an hour. We can get ice cream at Pops Ice Cream Shoppe on King Street after the tour ends. We'll be back at my house by 9:30 p.m. for everybody to head for home.
COST: plan on bringing $25 to cover dinner & ice cream after the tour. The cost of the Ghost Tour is $90 total; with 15 people that's $6 per person. If we have fewer than 15 people, the cost goes up per person. Depending on how many people wind up coming, plan on bringing the appropriate amount in cash to cover the cost of the tour (I cannot handle any cash ahead of time; I've simply reserved the tour, and we'll pay in cash on Saturday).
ADDRESS: my address is as follows-
607 South Columbus Street
Alexandria, VA 22314
The simplest way to get to my house is Route 4 north to the Capital Beltway; take the Inner Loop across the Wilson Bridge and get off at the 2nd exit once you've crossed the bridge, which is Route 1 North. Make your first right turn onto Franklin Street, then proceed to the first traffic light (which is South Columbus Street) and turn left. Our house is towards the end of the block on the left (if you cross Gibbon Street- a one way street with a traffic light, you've gone too far).
Please email me by Wednesday, June 15th if you plan on coming up for a fun afternoon away from the pool! I'm looking forward to a great afternoon!

Hi everybody,
There is a meet on Sunday, June 26, up at UMBC, hosted by RAC & ASC. The pertinent info is listed below; please email me no later than 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31 to let me know if you'd like your child entered in the meet.

We'll resume our regular workout schedule (scy) on Monday Morning, May 23, 2011.
Thanks to everybody from Wagner Aquatic Club who came down to train long course with us this weekend! We really enjoyed having you here and can't wait until we can do it again!
Tuesday, May 17, 2011
This coming weekend (May 21-22), we'll be hosting members of the Wagner Aquatic Club from Staten Island, NY here at the Hall Aquatic Center. They're coming to spend a couple of days training long course with us. The practice schedule for those two days is as follows:
Saturday, May 21: 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.;
Saturday, May 21: 6-8 p.m. (optional)
Sunday, May 22: 6-8 a.m.
This is a great opportunity to train with some fast, unfamiliar faces. Make sure you hydrate appropriately before each workout, and be ready to challenge yourself; remember, unless you step outside of your comfort zone, you'll never really know what you're capable of - and this is a great weekend to find out!
Looking forward to some great long course training, email me if you have any questions!

Congratulations on a great showing this past weekend at our very first long course meters ("LCM") meet! I was very impressed with everybody's positive attitude & strong kicking in their races! Keep up the good work as we move through the summer season!
There is a meet on May 7 & 8 hosted by Columbia Aquatics Association up at Fairland Aquatic Center. This meet has a "not faster than" entry standard: anybody who has not yet achieved the "A" time standard in an event- either short course OR long course- is eligible to swim.
If anybody is interested in swimming in this meet, please email me (erikcollins19@gmail.com) no later than Wednesday Morning, April 13, by 10 a.m. and let me know. We'll have to move quickly to get the entry squared away, but if the interest is there, we'll get it done.
Looking forward to hearing from everybody, thanks for being a part of SMAC!

The Sunday & Wednesday Bronze Group will go one extra week, until Wednesday, April 27, to make up for the two canceled workouts earlier in the session. There will be workout on Sunday, April 24 and again on Wednesday, April 27. Both of these workouts will be at the regularly scheduled workout time.
On Wednesday, April 27, we'll have our "Mini-Meet." This will consist of a quick warmup, then everybody will have a chance to race a single 25 yard swim in each of the four strokes. At the end, if anybody wants to swim a 100 yard IM (Individual Medley- one length of each stroke consecutively), they can! Afterwards, we'll have a small goodie bag for everybody!
We're looking forward to an exciting finish of this session! If you have any questions, email me at:

I've heard back from the Retriever Aquatic Club, so we can enter their meet, May 13-15. The cut off times & "Eligibility Report" are posted on the bulletin board. I've not heard back yet from the folks at NBAC (June 10-13 and July 8-11), so I have no information on those meets yet.
The Retriever meet entry will have to be done by next Wednesday, April 13. I'll have those cut off times with me at the meet this weekend (or we can use converted scy times). Either way, email me by Wednesday, April 13, 2011 by 10 a.m. if your child wants to swim up at UMBC on May 13-15.

This meet will take place right here at the pool at our regular workout time. Everybody will have a chance to warmup, then we'll go through a 25 yard event in each stroke, along with a 50 Freestyle (and a 100 IM for anybody who's interested). We'll have some light refreshments afterwards (juice, cookies, et...) We'll need some parents to help time that afternoon; if you're able to help, please come down on deck next Thursday when you bring your child to workout.
We'll have regular workout the following week (Mon & Thu April 18 & 21) for anybody who is still in town over the break.

There is a long course meters ("LCM") meet being hosted by CBAC down in St. Mary's on April 8-10. We will only be swimming on Friday & Saturday, as I cannot be there on Sunday, April 10th (I've never raced in April, and my plans were made back in the Fall, which is why I cannot be there on Sunday, April 10th).
There are NO TIME STANDARDS for this meet, so everybody in the Silver, Gold & Platinum groups can swim in this meet.
The session schedule is as follows:
Friday, April 8:
OPEN Girls & Boys 1500M Free: warmup at 4 p.m., the meet starts at 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 9:
AM Session- 13 & Over Girls & Boys, warmup starts at 6:50 a.m., meet starts at 8 a.m.
PM Session- 9 through 12 year old Girls & Boys, warmup starts at 12:30 p.m., meet starts at 1:30 p.m.

Hello Bronze families and athletes!
SMAC will be offering a short Bronze Group session this Spring. This session will start soon after the current session ends late in April, and continue until just before school gets out (about five weeks, see the Front Desk for the official dates). This is an excellent opportunity for any existing member of the Bronze Group to keep their skills sharp until they get out of school and start their summer vacation!
Registration for this session is now open; you can register at the Front Desk. We'll be offering this session in two groups: an early group from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m., and then a later group from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Both groups will meet on Monday and Thursday. Register early, as the Bronze Group has been one of our most popular programs! Feel free to email me with any questions you might have at erikcollins19@gmail.com
We're looking forward to a great session! Thanks for your support of SMAC!
