Happy New Year to all our SMAC swimmers and their families!

Thank you for your support of SMAC in our inaugural year, we're really very excited for 2011, and glad that you're all going to be a part of it. Some of the things to look forward to in the coming calendar year are...
  • a second Bronze Group on Sunday & Wednesday;
  • dryland training for the senior groups starting this Spring;
  • long course meters ("LCM") training this summer for all groups
  • and perhaps most significantly, email notification of all blog postings; hopefully we can make that happen in January!
Again, thanks for your support of SMAC, we're looking forward to 2011!

December 18 & 19 meet warmup info: Annapolis & Westminster meets

Westminster Meet:

The warmup schedule is posted, SMAC swims in Lane 4 from 12:40 until 1:05 p.m. The meet starts at 1:15 p.m. I will give everybody a warmup to do, and I will meet you there by 1:15 for the start of the meet.

Bronze Group News:
Mini-meet and end of session party!

Hello parents & swimmers in the Bronze Group! Next Thursday, December 16,
we'll have our mini-meet and a little party afterward to mark the end of
our first Bronze Group session. We plan on starting right at 6:30 just like usual;
we'll let everybody swim easy- work on some drills, give everybody a chance to
go off the blocks- until 6:45, then we'll clear the pool so we can get started no
later than 6:50 p.m. We'll go through the following events:

25 yard Freestyle
25 yard Backstroke
25 yard Breaststroke
25 yard Butterfly
100 IM (individual medley- one length of each stroke)

We'll have an official starter using the electronic starting device, so everybody
can get acclimated to how events will start at sanctioned meets. We will need
thirteen parent volunteers to time (two per lane for six lanes, and one "Head
Timer" who starts two watches for each race in the unlikely event that one of
the watches used by a timer malfunctions). If you're interested in volunteering
to time, please come down on deck at the start of workout and let us know. It's
a great way to get a close-up view of all the action! We have plenty of stopwatches
for you to use, so please consider volunteering to time - we can't start the meet
until we have thirteen timers.

Once the meet is over (should be right around 7:30-7:40), we'll have juice &
goodies for everybody in the downstairs conference room - same room as our
Halloween Party (refreshments are courtesy of CCPR).

For the record, our last workout will be Monday, December 21 (regular time);
however, we've heard that several families will have already left for the holidays,
as well as one of our coaches. Additionally, there is an event scheduled here at the
pool that day, which will make things noisy, and cause us to have to swim in the
middle pool. So it's better for us to have our mini-meet on the 16th. If you can join
us for workout on December 21, GREAT - we're looking forward to having you!

On behalf of SMAC and its coaches, we want to thank all of you for being a part
of our club this first year! We're excited to be coaching your children, and looking
forward to watching them grow up and continue developing into accomplished
student-athletes. We hope to see all of you in the next session! Enjoy the holidays!

CONGRATULATIONS to everybody who swam this past weekend at the GBSA Thanksgiving Fest! SMAC had eleven student-athletes at the meet, and everybody swam very well, with everybody recording at least one lifetime best time! Complete results are posted on the bulletin board, along with the workout schedule for this week.

Also posted on the bulletin board are the time standards for the next meet we'll be attending (Platinum, Gold & Silver swimmers), the Winter Frolic, December 17-19, in Westminster, hosted by GTAC and MAC. I'll need to know by Tuesday, November 30 if your child is able to swim in the meet. Email me by noon on that Tuesday at erikcollins19@gmail.com - I'll also be handing out a "Meet Information Sheet" to everybody at workout this week. That will give you the dates, location, type of meet, events, warmup times and entry fees for the meet. I'm looking forward to another great meet!

Happy Thanksgiving to all the SMAC swimmers & their families!

Parent Meeting, Sunday, November 14, 2010

Thank you everybody for coming by today. I'm very excited for our first meet next weekend, and I wanted to review several things regarding basic meet procedures at USA Swimming meets. Hopefully this will make everybody aware of what to expect next weekend.

Meet warmup-
Most meet warmups are an hour long (some meets will split an hour warmup into two sessions to accommodate a large meet). The goal of any warmup should be to swim comfortably for a while in the host pool to get acclimated to its walls, markings on the pool bottom, ceiling & lighting, etc...before going through some pacework (senior swimmers, mostly) and sprints (everybody) to raise each swimmer's heart so they are ready to race. Most senior swimmers at big meets will swim warmup with one suit, then go change into their racing suit either after the warmup, or just before they sprint. The warmup is usually the time when the coach will positively check in swimmers for certain events, attend a coach's meeting, fix entries or pay entry fees. I personally try not to do too much coaching in warmup - unless a particular swimmer requires it. There will usually be a 5-10 minute break after the warmup before the meet starts. Some meets may assign lanes to each team for warmup.

Meet events-
USA Swimming meets offer just about the entire slate of events for each age group, so as to accommodate the development of each athlete as a complete swimmer, rather than just a 50 Freestyler. This is because what one swimmer may excel in as a ten year old, may not be what they excel in as a sixteen year old. Also, college coaches tend to look for versatile student-athletes who can swim a host of events well. Most meets will be held to the "Four Hour Rule," meaning they need to be completed in four hours, or the meet host can be fined. This is usually waived for bigger, championship-calibre meets. A lot of meets will be run as "timed finals," meaning everybody swims once, then all the times are scored fastest to slowest, and points are awarded to the fastest swimmers, once everybody has swum the particular event. The bigger meets are swum as "prelims & finals," meaning that everybody swims prelims, then the fastest 24 (or 16, or 30, or 18- depending on the meet), come back to swim finals at night. Points will be awarded in finals based on the order of finish in the finals race.

Meet Entries for SMAC
The deadline for the entries for SMAC swimmers will have to be one week prior to the published meet entry deadline, so I can submit a check request to the county in time to have it for the Meet Director at the start of the meet.I'll choose the events for each swimmer.

QUESTIONS?? This is the time to ask, don't be bashful...

Thanks for coming by today, I'm looking forward to the meet!

News & Notes for the week of November 8, 2010

*There will be a Parent Meeting in the upstairs Conference Room this coming Sunday, November 14, at 3:00 p.m. Parents from all groups are encourage to attend; I'll be going over what to expect at our meets- things like warmup, duration, types of meets, event selection, and perhaps most importantly, the meet entry procedure. If you have any questions, this will be a great opportunity to come by and ask me!

*Senior workout (Platinum & Gold) on Friday of this week (November 12), will be in the morning (5:30-7:00 a.m.). There won't be any afternoon workout for the Platinum, Gold or Silver groups on Friday Afternoon, November 12.

*Holiday workout schedule: The Platinum & Gold groups will have workout from 8-10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

*REPORT CARDS: all student-athletes are reminded to bring in their report cards so I can see how you're doing in school. Remember, the "student" always come first in "student-athlete," and I want to make sure everybody is working up to their ability in school- it's the most important thing you can do for yourself!

*GBSA MEET, November 19-21: we have twelve student-athletes swimming in the meet up in Catonsville in two weeks. We'll race on Saturday and Sunday only (NOBODY races on Friday, November 19); for anybody who races both days at the meet, you won't have workout on Monday, November 22. For the parents, once we iron out the entry fee procedure, we'll let you know who to make your check out to. This will be one of the topics covered in Sunday's meeting.

*Lastly, I've heard that several people have had some difficulty reaching me by email. My correct email address is: erikcollins19@gmail.com - I'm usually able to respond within a day, so if you've emailed me and never heard back, odds are I never received your email. So please check the address you used, and then go ahead and try emailing me again!

Thanks, I'm looking forward to seeing all the parents on Sunday, November 14th at 3:00 p.m.!

MEET INFORMATION for...

  • Platinum Group
  • Gold Group
  • Silver Group

There is a meet at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), Catonsville Campus the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 19-21. There are no cutoff times to get into the meet, and "No Time" entries are acceptable- so everybody in the Platinum, Gold & Silver groups can swim if they'd like to. The IM's are on Friday Night (for most age groups), and for Saturday & Sunday, the 12 & Unders race in the morning session (6:30 a.m. warmup as of the last posting), while the 13 & Overs race in the afternoon session (tentatively scheduled for a 12:15 p.m.) warmup.

The list of events is attached to this handout (and on the bulletin board as well); if your child is interested in swimming any day of this meet, email me at erikcollins19@gmail.com by noon on Saturday, November 6, so I can enter them in the meet. EMAIL IS THE ONLY WAY TO LET ME KNOW YOUR CHILD IS INTERESTED IN SWIMMING IN THE MEET. (Again, my email address is: erikcollins19@gmail.com) I will choose the events for each swimmer, and email you with the list of events and the total fees you'll owe for the meet.

Sorry for the short notice about this meet; now that we are official, I can plan a tentative Meet Schedule for the rest of the year. I should be able to distribute that just after the Thanksgiving holiday.

I'm looking forward to a great meet!

A special thanks to everybody who contributed to our Halloween Party for the Bronze Group last night, especially Puja, Sharon & Erica at the Front Desk, who put together the goody bags for everybody! All those gooey, sugary treats generously provided by the parents were quite a hit as well. The "bobbing for apples" proved to be quite an entertaining way to wrap things up. A good time was had by all, and we're looking forward to hosting a similar get-together after our "mini-meet" at the end of the session. Thaks again to everybody for helping with the set-up and the clean-up afterwards!

REMINDER...

We are unable to run our "mock meet" this Sunday, as the computer has yet to arrive back from the Colorado Timing repair facility. We'll let everybody know if we're able to reschedule.

Have a safe Halloween!

Week of October 24th, 2010

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!

This just in...

We are NOT going to have our "Mock Meet" this Sunday as we had originally planned. Unfortunately, the computer has not yet been returned from Colorado Timing Systems, and with it being Halloween on Sunday, we don't anticipate many of the younger swimmers skipping out on Trick or Treating in order to be at the pool for our meet. I'm sorry if this inconveniences anybody.

We'll let you know when we can go ahead and run the meet once the computer is back.

I hope everybody enjoys all sorts of Halloween festivities!

OCTOBER NEWS

BIG NEWS...

As of Monday, October 11, 2010, SMAC has been officially granted a charter within USA Swimming! This is great news! We can now start the process of registering our athletes and competing in meets! I will be meeting with the registration chairperson this weekend to get up to speed with the process here in MD (it's a little different in each LSC). My goal is to be able to swim in a meet the weekend before Thanksgiving; I'll post information on that meet here, and on the bulletin board across from the balcony, later this week.

Speaking of the BALCONY...

The balcony is OPEN! Parents are encouraged to sit in the balcony if they're going to be staying at the pool during their child's workout. REMINDER...as per USA Swimming insurance regulations, NO PARENTS ARE ALLOWED ON THE POOL DECK AT ANY TIME DURING WORKOUT. Please use the balcony if you're going to be staying at the pool during your child's workout. Thank you for understanding and adhering to this policy.

BRONZE GROUP - there will be a small Halloween-themed party for the Bronze Group following workout on Thursday, October 28, downstairs in the Conference Room. It will last until about 8:00 p.m. More details to follow next week...

SENIOR GROUP- there will be a College Night this coming Sunday, October 17, from 3-4 p.m. upstairs in the meeting room for all high school Juniors and Seniors in the Platinum & Gold groups. Parents and athletes are encouraged to attend, and start learning about the college recruiting process.

Lastly...

We're hoping to run a "mock meet" here at the pool towards the end of October. This will give everybody a chance to swim their races here at home before we go off to our first meet, as well as a chance for the pool staff to run the timing system prior to any of the meets they'll be hosting this year. The actual date depends on when the Colorado Timing System is fixed and returned to the facility. More info to follow next week.

REMINDER...everybody should be bringing in their report cards for the coaches to review!

We're off to a good start, everybody keep up the good work! Any questions, feel free to email me at erikcollins19@gmail.com

Week Of September 19, 2010

REMINDER for all SMAC families:

SwimPro, Inc., will be at the pool this coming Sunday, September 26 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. All families are encouraged to come by and have their children fitted for swim suits, buy equipment (mesh bags, snorkels, goggles, fins, etc...), and pick up anything else you may need for the swimmers in your family.

If you have any questions about what your particular child might need, feel free to email me at erikcollins19@gmail.com

Balcony Update-

As we've mentioned before, no parents are allowed on deck during workout (or meets, unless working as an official), as per USA Swimming's Insurance Regulations. The balcony here at the Hall Aquatic Center is the ideal spot for any parent to watch workout if you plan to stay at the pool while your child is swimming. However, the balcony is not yet finished and subsequently, still closed. The plexiglass necessary to finish the job should be here anyday to be installed, then all that is needed is an inspection by the county. Once the inspection is completed and the county is satisfied with everything, then it will be open. Parents are encouraged to make use of the balcony to watch your child during workout.

SCHOOL- Believe it or not, we're already into the last few days of September, which means the "honeymoon is over" for the new school year. Everybody should be on top of their school work, and have a routine that helps them work well (and work in a timely manner). Parents are reminded that each student-athlete on SMAC needs to show us a copy of their report card so we know everybody is doing well in school. If anybody is struggling with any part of their curriculum, we encourage them to get some extra help immediately - don't wait until the end of a marking period - so a small issue doesn't snowball into a major one.

That's all for this week; don't forget to come by on Sunday between 3 & 4:30 to get all your swim equipment from SwimPro. We're looking forward to seeing everybody on Sunday!

Week of September 12, 2010

Schedule for the week:

Platinum - Sunday, 4-6; Mon-Fri, 4:30 until 6 or 6:15 p.m.
Gold- Sunday 4-6; Mon-Fri, 4:30-6 p.m.
Silver- Mon & Thu, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Tue, Wed & Fri, 5:00 until 6 or 6:15 p.m.
Bronze- Mon & Thu, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The HS Group (HSG) and the Weekly Swim Clinic (WSC) are not yet being offered.

Workouts for all four groups went very well during our first week. Turnout was good and we covered a lot of ground. Emphasis will continue to be on kicking (with drilling) in the Platinum & Gold groups, and stroke drills (with some kicking) in the Silver and Bronze groups.

QUESTIONS I'VE HAD ON DECK:

Can my child move from the Bronze group into the Silver group?
We group everybody based on age, and the Silver group is for athletes aged 9-12, so if your child is still 8 years old, we'll likely keep them in the Bronze group for at least the current session. If you're interested in additional workout time for your child who is in the Bronze group, we will gladly have them in our Clinic (Weekly Swim Clinic, or WSC) once we start that group (September 26).

When will go to meets?
Ideally your child will race once a month, beginning in October. We will post a meet schedule once we have one.

REMINDER:

PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON DECK DURING WORKOUT, as per the USA Swimming Insurance regulations. Thank you for understanding the need for all parents to be off the pool deck during your child's scheduled workout time.

SwimPro will be at the pool on Sunday, September 26 suits & equipment for our families to purchase.

Let's have a great week!
